just what is storytelling photography anyway?

So you might have noticed me go on and on about lifestyle and storytelling photography on this site. And that’s basically because I love it. But what is it?

Storytelling photography is a step away from what you might typically think of when it comes to a photo session. Here’s what it’s not: It’s not about everyone sitting in their Sunday best, looking straight into the camera and smiling their biggest smiles. There is nothing wrong with those pictures – they can be beautiful. But when you look back at them, what do you remember? What piece of you and your personality comes through?

Storytelling and lifestyle photography can be looked at as a day in your life – while it’s not perfect, it’s real. Instead of looking back to your pictures and saying , “Oh, everyone is smiling  – except Jimmy is making that weird face – it kind of ruins it.” I want you to say, “Ha, Jimmy’s making that face again – it’s so him!” Because sometimes the funny faces, or the sad faces, or the ones even barely facing the camera are the ones we will want to remember when we’ve moved on from this moment in time. mom kisses daughter in lifestyle photography session

Here’s what makes it extra special – you know how you spent weeks, maybe months searching for your perfect home? And maybe you’ve worked hard at renovating it, making it feel homey and perfect? Or maybe the plan is that you’re just where you are temporarily, and you plan on moving on in a couple of years.  Regardless, this is where you are now – this is your now. Having a session in your house means that you get to use this place, the place that you have made into your home for however long as it is, as the backdrop for your photos.

And that’s perfect, because we all know that while kids can be unpredictable, there is no question that they are more comfortable in their own home than anywhere else. That means that while they might be standoffish with me in a public place where they’ve never been before, at home they will probably want to interact with me more. And that comfort level shows in their photographs.  It’s where they not only feel like they can truly be themselves, but that they want to show all the great stuff that they have to offer – showing off their toys and games and their rooms. Which is perfect, because that’s exactly what I want to capture. The toys, the games, the favourite clothes that they have *right now*. Because we all know how quickly that can change.

You’ve probably heard the old adage about parenthood “The days are long, but the years are short.” It’s easy to get caught up in it all and miss the little things. I’m here to snap them up for you and put them on your wall, or in an album, and forever in your heart.

So ahead of time, I ask you some questions about you and your loved ones. What do you love? What do you want to remember about this moment in time? And then I make sure that I get it all when I’m there. The games you and your kids like to play. The special way your youngest twirls her hair when she’s concentrating on something. The look your husband gets when he reads to the kids. As well as the details you won’t want to forget: the trinkets on your baby’s dresser, and so on. That’s lifestyle – it’s real.

So storytelling isn’t about getting the best toothy grin (although I do love those!). It’s about taking this episode of your life and putting it in a time capsule.

I’d love to talk to you more about it and how we can make it extra special for you – to do so, please contact me, and don’t forget to check out some of the kind words others have said about their sessions.

hi! i’m julia!

This is me, and these are my two little monsters: Scarlett, who’s 4 (going on 15), and Felix, who’s 2. I am a lifestyle, documentary family photographer based in Owen Sound, but I do cover all of Grey Bruce and a good portion of Simcoe County. Here are:Julia Francesca and kids

5 things I have learned about myself since becoming a mom:

1. I can kill spiders now.
When I was little, my mom told me that if I didn’t brush my hair, spiders would crawl in and make a nest. Yeah, instead of getting me to brush my hair more, that just made me deathly afraid of spiders. Thanks Mom! Once I became a mom myself, however, I realized that it won’t really do for me to run away squealing like a maniac when I see one in front of the kids. So I put on my big girl pants and kill them. Only when I have to. Once the kids are in bed, all bets are off.

2. Being thrown up on isn’t that big of a deal.

I would never have guessed that not only would I accept being thrown up on with grace, but that I could be repeatedly thrown up on and not even rush to change my clothes. And we’re not just talking baby spit up either. It’s remarkable. (disclaimer: tested by my kids only)

3. Imagine the worst, most disgusting mess you can think of. I can clean that up.2015-05-13_0001

You know that legend about the baby that liked to decorate their crib with their own waste? That legend was about one of my kids (I won’t reveal who to protect her identity). I would tell people about it, and they’d say, “I wouldn’t be able to handle that. There is no way I would be able to clean that up.” But you know what? You would. You just can. Because you have to. It’s like going into stinky, disgusting survival mode. Mind you, a hazmat suit would have been preferable. And no, I didn’t take any pictures. No one else should have to see that. Ever.

4. I can watch kids shows all the way through without going insane.

Except for Caillou. No one should have to watch Caillou.

5. I am capable of feeling an insane amount of love for someone while being insanely frustrated with them at the same time.

My littles are very little. And there are times when having to wear the red hat when they want the blue hat but not THAT blue hat because that blue hat fell on the ground last Tuesday, can be a lot to handle at that age. I get it, most of the time. And while I don’t always handle every ‘crisis’ the way I probably should, and while there are days when there doesn’t seem to be enough wine in the world, I cannot imagine my life without these crazy little monkeys. A silly look or a sneaky smile turns me to goo and makes me remember why I go through all the trouble.

What’s your family’s story? I’d love to tell it through pictures.  You can find out what to expect during your session. And you can read some kind words from people I’ve already worked with.

frequently asked questions (or what you might be thinking)

I don’t know if this fits in my budget.

The amazing thing about having a session done is that these images will last far longer than you or I ever will. And every time you look at them, the memories of that time in your life will come flooding back, and stories can be shared for generations to come. Worth it, isn’t it?  That being said, you only buy what you love, pure and simple.

I’d love to get my family pictures done, but I just want to lose about 10 lbs first.

Hey, I hear you. Unfortunately, there is a good chance that we will never be fully happy with our bodies, especially after having kids. I am the first to admit that there is some extra junk in my trunk that doesn’t seem to be hitting the road any time soon. Here’s the thing though: every moment you wait, you end up missing. Moments are fleeting. This is your ‘now’, and it’s pretty amazing.

I feel awkward in front of a camera.

Psst, me too! Get me together for a group photo and I make a terrible face that I didn’t even know I could make – what is it about standing in front of a camera that’s makes us so weird and unnatural? So yeah, I get it. I’m all about capturing the way you interact with each other, not the way you can smile on command. You get to just be yourself. Do what you normally do, and you’ll just forget I’m even there. What if I don’t like the photos?

Julia Francesca Photography has a 100% satisfaction policy. No one is happy if you’re not happy. Contact me for details.

My husband HATES getting pictures done.

C’mon guys, what’s the deal? Just kidding! Let’s face it, family photography can be uncomfortable and awkward. You have to wear clothes that your wife picked out. You have to sit in a park and try and hold down kids that are one step away from screaming like maniacs, when all you really want to do on your day off is sit and watch some TV. I totally get it. You’re going to love my sessions. No matching outfits. No parks (unless you guys want to go there). And if you want to watch TV, go for it – but I’m going to take pictures of it!

I think my kids will be too wild during the session.

Perfect! Yep, I meant that. If your kids are wild, let’s capture it! Those always make for the best pictures – the memories that will ring the most true years from now. Plus, you can always think ahead to those wedding slideshows..

I will add that because I’m not asking your kids to sit nicely for me and to look into the camera and smile, they will be much more comfortable. That’s not to say there won’t be at least one meltdown – there probably will be! But that comes with the territory with kids, and yep, I’ll capture those too.

Our life isn’t very exciting – there probably isn’t anything to photograph.

Until you stop and think about it, it’s hard to realize just how much actually goes on in a typical day. I’m not talking about activities or events. I’m talking about bits of personality. The tantrums. The sleepy snuggles. The silly grins. Days go by where you miss them entirely – that’s why I’m there to capture them. Prior to your session, I will get together with you to make a rough schedule of what we will be aiming for, but I promise you that there will be tons of moments to capture no matter what we have planned.

Picking what to wear is TOO HARD.

Yeah, it’s a pain. I’ll make it easy for you. Wear what you feel comfortable and look good in. That’s it. As for the kids, let them pick out their outfits. If your kids are too small to do it, find something for them that you love to see them in (just make sure it isn’t something that they will find uncomfortable).

One thing though – PLEASE do not wearing identically matching outfits. Why? Do you wear the same thing as Grandma on a regular basis? No? Then leave your black shirts and khakis in the closet, and wear something that just screams you. No one looks cool wearing the same outfit as their entire family. Seriously, no one.

If you have issues making a decision, I am more than happy to help you narrow down some choices. Just let me know.

My house is messy. Do we have to do the session there?

In home sessions are great because they are a part of your history, and your memories. And you can clean up as much as you feel comfortable doing. The state of your house helps tell the story too, and can be a great glimpse into what life is like in this stage of your life (when my second was born, it looked like a nuclear explosion targeted my home for months).
That being said, you are definitely not restricted to having the session in your home. Choose any location that has some meaning for you and your family. If there is a trail you love to hike, let’s go for it! If you all love to go to Storybook Park, let’s make that happen! The sky is the limit – we’ll go over it all during your pre-session consultation.

I love the idea of putting pictures up on my walls, but I have no idea where to begin.

Never fear – that’s why I’m here! During our consultations, we’ll talk about what kind of products will work best for your family. When I come to your house during your reveal and ordering session, I will bring my special software that can show you exactly what your pictures will look like on the wall of your choosing. It’s like magic. Check out this blog post for more information.

Do you do events?

You bet. If you’ve got a birthday party, baby shower, anniversary party or other event coming up, let me know! The more notice you can give me, the better chance my calendar will be clear.

Can I just get the digital files on a disc or USB?

Short answer: yes, of course you can! Long answer: try to think hard about what you want them for. There are many reasons why you’ll benefit from having me get your images and products professionally printed as opposed to doing it yourself, and we can go over all of that during your consultation. To be honest, a lot of times we have good intentions, but those good intentions end up sitting in a drawer with that disc, just collecting dust. What a waste!

I know how fun it is to share your images with friends and family, which is why I include a web-sized digital version of every print you purchase absolutely free – perfect for sharing on Facebook, via email, or beyond.

Do you do wedding photography?

I have decided to dedicate myself to family and child documentary sessions at this time, however, I do engagement sessions as well.

Let’s book this thing!
